How Do Search Engines Work ?

Search Engines are actually easy to understand once you break them down into the functions they perform... Understanding how they work and what they do can dramatically give you the tools and knowlegde to increase your traffic immensely.

#1  CRAWLING -  Search Engines basically send out a spider to complete a scan of your website. This means that they will go over all the text and images as well as other hidden information to find out what your site is about.

After it finishes the main page of your website it will also start crawling all other pages that are connected to that page.  It does this by finding links to other pages internally to your domain.  They do this so that your website can be indexed.. 

#2  SEARCH ENGINE INDEXING - Once your site has been crawled it will be indexed with the information it gathered from the spiders.  This is why it is important to have the Title and Meta tags setup properly as Search Engines use them for listing your site in the searches.  

#3  RANKING -  Once your site is indexed it will be placed in rank based on its importance and traffic.  For example if you have a website about animals and someone searches for info on "Dogs" then you might find your site listed in the search engines on page 5,000 (if you have a new and small site) or top ten if you have an established and informative one.  So remember to cross your T's and dot your I's when it comes to creating your web pages as every little bit counts especially when you are new and attempting to get listed on Google, Yahoo and Bing etc...

#4   SEARCH RESULTS...

This is the final stage and most important.  When someone visits Google or Yahoo they are going there to find a site that matches their needs. They find what they want by inserting keywords. The Search Engine will display the search results based on their query.  So, make every attempt to keep your website or Blog filled with text and relevant information regarding a subject or interest, this will help you come up first on the search results for that keyword or subject. 

HINT:  Create as many backlinks to your site as possible.  This will help the Search Engines find you and index your site.  The more sites that link back to you the better, especially a backlink from a website with the same interest as yours.
